What causes deck damage?
Several things can lead to deck damage. Materials vary and so do the concerns that go along with each one. While PVC and composite decks require little to no maintenance and will probably not require deck repair, traditional wood decks are vulnerable and require more care than their synthetic counterparts.
Although most woods used in decking tend to be naturally bug-resistant, they require occasional stains or treatments to prevent weather damage. Without treatment, wood decks are susceptible to swelling and rotting. Continuous cycles of wetting and drying, and heat and cold, will lead to cracking, swelling, and warping. Additionally, improper application of stains can render them ineffective and lead to rotting. Old stains should be removed before applying a new one, so that the fibers are open and receptive to the new treatment. Proper stain application will extend the life of your deck.
However, years of water and sun exposure can wear down even the best-prepared deck. Fading and discoloration occur after years of sun exposure. Wood ages over time. Pressure from foot traffic and heavy grills and patio furniture can weaken boards. Nearly any deck will eventually require some deck repair, no matter how carefully maintained.
